Qantas First for Boeing¡¯s Aircraft Performance Tool

Australian flagship carrier Qantas will be the first airline to receive US aerospace and defence firm Boeing's innovative new iPad-based OPT technology.
The Boeing OPT (Onboard Performance Tool) presents pilots with a wealth of information that they can use when flying commercial aircraft in and out of the world's airports. This information, says Boeing, includes optimum aircraft speed and engine settings data for every airport's runway in all types of weather conditions.
As a result, pilots using the Onboard Performance Tool have, in their hands, accurate and time-saving runway condition, pressure variation and engine performance calculations that can be accessed instantly.

The Boeing Onboard Performance Tool can thus help airlines achieve huge efficiency, payload and range gains. It can also bring about engine maintenance and fuel cost reductions.
Qantas' 130-strong Boeing airliner fleet, including twin-engined 737-400s, 737-800s and 767-300ERs and four-engined 747-400s and 747-400ERs, will begin to use the OPT from September 2012 onwards.
"The mobile OPT is the latest of our industry-leading airplane applications, part of our Digital Airline solutions suite", explained Boeing Commercial Aviation Services' vice president, Per Noren. "It was developed to give our customers a marketplace advantage as they serve their customers and run the most efficient operations possible."

"The Boeing mobile OPT is very well aligned with our flight deck mobile strategy", added Qantas' Flight Technical head, Captain David Oliver, in a statement on the Qantas Boeing IPT purchase. "We especially appreciate the OPT's remarkable flexibility, which allows us to define unique policies and configurations to suit our needs."
Over the past two months, over 80 airlines have approached Boeing to either get more information on the iPad-based Onboard Performance Tool or to be given quotes.
"We have been very successful in the marketplace with our existing OPT application, but our customers told us they wanted a version for iPad", concluded Boeing Commercial Aviation Services' Airline Performance Management director, John Maggiore. "When they talk, we listen, because we want to give them the competitive advantage they need to be successful every day. That's all part of the Boeing Edge."
